Press Release: The Third Way Cultural Alliance Preserves the Album as an Art Form in the Age of Digital Devaluation

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

The Third Way Cultural Alliance: A New Model for Supporting Artists and Preserving the Album as an Art Form

[Philadelphia, April 1] – In a rapidly evolving music industry where digital platforms and commercial pressures continue to sideline world-class musicians, the Third Way Cultural Alliance (TWCA) is pioneering a new model for artist sustainability. TWCA is a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing financial support for musicians to record and distribute their work without the limitations of commercial market forces or traditional nonprofit constraints, preserving the album as a primary artistic format.

Since its inception, TWCA has facilitated direct connections between visionary artists and engaged donors, ensuring that culturally significant music continues to thrive. Exemplified by successful recent projects such as TRIAD, Obed Calvaire’s 150 Million Gold Francs, and the Morocco Mission, TWCA is demonstrating that artists can retain creative control, produce high-quality albums, and engage in meaningful cultural exchange when supported by a community that values artistic integrity over mass-market appeal.

The Urgency of the Third Way

The traditional commercial and nonprofit music sectors have fallen short in supporting modern musicians who push creative boundaries. The commercial market increasingly favors algorithm-driven, short-form content, leaving serious musicians struggling to fund and release full-length albums. Meanwhile, the nonprofit sector tends to prioritize legacy art forms, often overlooking contemporary expressions that speak directly to today’s cultural landscape.

TWCA offers an alternative: a funding base that liberates musicians from commercial pressures while providing a path to worldwide distribution. This approach ensures that culturally vital music— jazz, experimental, or globally influenced—remains accessible, resonant, and artistically uncompromised.

A Model of Success: TWCA’s Impact

TWCA has already made significant strides in reshaping the landscape for independent artists:

  • TRIAD – A genre-blending trio whose debut album was fully funded by a donor, covering production and publicity to ensure the artists’ financial stability from the outset.

  • Obed Calvaire’s 150 Million Gold Francs – A profound musical exploration of Haiti’s colonial history, pressed to vinyl and strategically limited on digital platforms to maintain artistic integrity.

  • The Morocco Mission – A cultural exchange led by legendary bassist Jamaaladeen Tacuma, fostering deep musical dialogue between Philadelphia and Morocco’s rich Gnaoua traditions.

Upcoming:

  • Lisa Marie Simmons' upcoming release – A spoken-word jazz project addressing issues of Black identity and transracial adoption, supported through a designated donation from Watson & Associates.

  • The Mexico City Expedition – A cross-border collaboration bringing together musicians from Philadelphia, Mexico and South America. Scheduled for late April, the week long expedition will feature live shows, panel discussions, and cultural exploration in the city.

  • Several New projects are in the works, top be announced in Late April 2025

Expanding the Mission in 2025

The initiative aims to raise $50 million over the next five years, starting with an $8 million endowment to fund the recording, production, and promotion of full-length, culturally significant albums. This funding will not only sustain artists but also help preserve music that might otherwise go undocumented due to financial pressures.

Looking ahead, TWCA will continue to champion artist-driven storytelling, cross-cultural collaboration, and sustainable album creation

TWCA invites donors, foundations, and music advocates to join in this movement to protect the art of the album, preserve artistic integrity, and ensure that vital music continues to reach the world.
